The East Williston School District is celebrating a special academic achievement — the work of Willets Road student Anum Tariq and her teachers, Ms. Christine Lopez and Ms. Laura Webster, has been published in a new professional development book for educators.

Their classroom project is featured in “Nine Dimensions of Scaffolding for Multilingual Learners,” written by Dr. Andrea Honigsfeld, Dr. Maria Dove, and Dr. Carrie McDermott-Goldman, who are leading experts in the field of multilingual education. The book provides teachers with practical strategies to support the linguistic, social-emotional, and academic growth of multilingual learners across all subject areas.

As part of an ENL/ELA co-taught class, Anum and her teachers created a plot map that demonstrates a “visual scaffold strategy” — a tool that helps students understand and organize complex ideas. Their work was selected to be featured as a model for educators nationwide.

“Ms. Lopez and Ms. Webster are models of collaboration and co-teaching, and students thrive in their care,” said Faith Tripp, Director of World Languages and ENL for the East Williston School District. “They create thoughtful, scaffolded lessons that provide multiple ways for every student to grow in language and literacy.”

Ms. Tripp added, “We are so proud to have the hard work of Ms. Lopez, Ms. Webster, and Anum recognized and celebrated. We’re grateful to Dr. McDermott-Goldman for inviting our teachers and students to share their work as a model.”
