The Hidden Dangers of Facebook Marketplace: A Wake-Up Call for Our Community

By Elise Vaidya

For many, Facebook Marketplace is a go-to platform for buying and selling everyday items. But what should be a simple exchange can sometimes turn into a dangerous situation—something one East Williston native recently experienced firsthand.

In late March, Matthew, a lifelong resident of East Williston, was the victim of a violent attack while attempting to sell an old cell phone through Facebook Marketplace. Despite arranging the meeting in a public area during daylight hours and taking precautions, he was ambushed by three individuals who attempted to steal the phone. The encounter escalated quickly, and Matthew was stabbed in the attack.

Thankfully, he survived—but the incident serves as a sobering reminder that no online transaction is ever 100% safe, even when precautions are taken.

This is not an isolated incident. Similar attacks have been reported in recent months across the region, raising serious concerns about the safety of peer-to-peer online sales. While platforms like Facebook Marketplace offer convenience, they can also be exploited by individuals with criminal intent.

What You Can Do to Stay Safe:

Law enforcement agencies recommend the following safety tips when using any online marketplace:

  • Use designated safe exchange zones, often available at local police stations.

  • Never meet alone—bring a friend or family member with you.

  • Avoid carrying cash and consider using digital payment options.

  • Trust your instincts—if something feels off, don’t go through with the transaction.

  • Limit personal information sharing and keep communications within the app.

Even with these precautions, it’s important to understand the risks and remain vigilant.

This incident has deeply shaken our community, and it underscores the importance of raising awareness about the potential dangers of online selling platforms. Let Matthew’s story be a powerful reminder: stay alert, take safety seriously, and help spread the word to protect others.

If you or someone you know has experienced a similar incident, please report it to local law enforcement and share your experience to help educate others.

Let’s look out for one another and keep our community safe.
