Nassau County Cracks Down on Unsafe E-Bike and Scooter Use

By Chris Orlando, Police Officer, 3rd Precinct POP Unit

Nassau County officials are taking a hard stance on the improper use of motorized scooters and e-bikes in public spaces. A new public awareness campaign titled “Don’t Catch a Charge” warns residents about the legal consequences of violating traffic laws while operating these increasingly popular forms of transportation.

The campaign, spearheaded by County Executive Bruce A. Blakeman and Commissioner of Police Patrick J. Ryder, outlines strict guidelines to ensure public safety. Riders must wear helmets and must be at least 16 years old to operate an e-bike or scooter. Additionally, riding on sidewalks and exceeding a speed of 20 mph are strictly prohibited.

Violators may face serious consequences. Motorized scooters operated improperly in public areas—including highways, parking lots, and sidewalks—can be impounded. Repeat offenses under Nassau County Miscellaneous Law, Title 61, may result in fines of up to $700.

Law enforcement urges the community to stay vigilant. Reckless e-bike riding should be reported immediately to 911.

As e-bike and scooter use continues to rise, Nassau County is committed to ensuring safety comes first.
