Community Turns Out for Fire Safety, Food, and Family Fun with the Volunteer Fire Department

On June 12th, residents gathered in front of the Fire House for a lively and educational evening of fire safety, food, and fun hosted by the East Williston Volunteer Fire Department.

The event focused on the importance of carbon monoxide (CO) detection. Attendees learned what steps to take if a CO alarm goes off in their home:

• Get outside immediately—everyone should leave the building and move to fresh air. Carbon monoxide is odorless, so trust your alarm and get out immediately.

• Do not open windows before getting out- our firefighters have detection monitors that can help pinpoint the source of the carbon monoxide and ensure that any issues are dealt with.

• Have a plan and practice- designate a meeting spot for everyone to meet, and practice identifying all the exits from each room.

• Do not re-enter the building until the emergency responders declare it safe.

The evening also featured a hands-on safety demonstration where younger attendants had a chance to try out a water extinguisher firsthand.

The grill sizzled with burgers, hot dogs, and souvlaki, cooked by the department’s own volunteers. It was a beautiful night for neighbors to mingle, learn, and enjoy a summer evening together.

The East Williston Volunteer Fire Department looks forward to welcoming the community back for another open drill next month. Residents of all ages are encouraged to stop by to see the volunteers in action, enjoy more family-friendly activities, and learn vital safety tips.

Interested in joining the fire department? If you’ve ever thought about becoming a volunteer firefighter, the next open house is the perfect opportunity to learn more. The Village is in great need of additional volunteers, and the fire department is always recruiting. Come meet the members, ask questions, and see how you can make an impactful difference in your community!
