Herricks High School Junior Named Nassau County Teen Poet Laureate

By Williston Post Staff

Herricks High School junior Kristen Lee has been selected as the recipient of the Nassau County Teen Poet Laureate Scholarship, earning the honor of serving as Nassau County's Teen Poet Laureate during her senior year.

Chosen by a panel of former Poets Laureate for her outstanding application and exceptional literary talent, Kristen will become only the second student to hold the countywide title.

The Teen Poet Laureate program, facilitated by the Nassau County Poet Laureate Society, seeks to amplify youth voices, encourage civic engagement through poetry, and celebrate the literary achievements of high school students across Nassau County. In addition to the title, Kristen will receive a scholarship recognizing her accomplishments as a young writer.

The initiative was founded by Alan Semerdjian, a Herricks High School English teacher who has served as Nassau County Poet Laureate since 2024. Through the program, students are given opportunities to use poetry as a tool for creative expression, community engagement, and leadership.

Kristen's achievement will be formally recognized at a special ceremony on May 30 at the Farmingdale Public Library, where she will be honored alongside members of the county's literary community.

Herricks Public Schools congratulates Kristen on this remarkable accomplishment and applauds the dedication, creativity, and hard work that led to this recognition. The district also extends its appreciation to the teachers and mentors who have supported her throughout her academic journey.

As she prepares to take on her new role, Kristen will represent not only Herricks High School but also the next generation of writers and storytellers helping to shape the cultural and literary landscape of Nassau County.
