The Fight for Independence
by Charlotte Eichner
The American Revolution was a war that took place between the years 1775 and 1783 in the American colonies. The war started in places like Massachusetts and other colonies. The American Revolution happened because many colonists were unhappy because they had to follow British laws and pay taxes without having a say in the government. Now let’s take a closer look at the Patriots’ side!
According to the article, “The American Revolution” it says, “The colonists wanted to gain freedom from Great Britain.” The colonists thought British rule was unfair because the colonists had no voice in the government, especially decision making. In addition, King George III made laws that controlled the colonists' lives like the Quartering Act of 1765. This is important because the king forced people to let British soldiers live in the colonists’ homes even if the colonists didn’t want the British to come in.
The article also mentions, “The British wanted to tax the colonists because of the French and Indian War” because King George needed to pay for the damages from that big war.
Another reason the Patriots thought the American Revolution was necessary was that the colonists wanted financial freedom. This shows that the colonists wanted to keep their money to build a new life. In the book, If You Lived During the Time of the American Revolution it stated the colonists said, “No taxation without representation.” This is important because the colonists did not have a say in the way their money was being spent. The colonists worked hard only to pay their taxes to King George III.
In conclusion, the American Revolution was important and necessary for the colonists in order to gain independence and be able to build a new life in America.
