In a heartwarming display of community, compassion, and collaboration, The Wheatley School recently hosted its first-ever Wheatley Games—a vibrant field day dedicated to celebrating neurodiversity and fostering inclusion through the joy of physical activity.
Organized by students from The Wheatley School, part of the East Williston Union Free School District, the event welcomed neurodivergent students from neighboring school districts, including Jericho, Roslyn, and Carle Place. The young athletes participated in a series of engaging athletic events, such as the 50-meter relay, long jump, and bowling.
“The sports activities provided a platform for students to engage in physical exercise, while also working on improved social skills, greater self-esteem, and increased feelings of inclusion,” said Dr. Lynn Mazza, Executive Director of Student Support Services.
Throughout the day, student volunteers from The Wheatley School served as buddies, offering encouragement, companionship, and support to their peers. The event not only sparked friendly competition but also helped cultivate meaningful friendships between students across districts.
“This event was a special opportunity that allowed students to engage in some friendly competition with neighboring schools, as well as support the development of new friendships amongst Wheatley students,” Dr. Mazza added.
The Wheatley Games were spearheaded by student leader Alyssa Bhagan, whose vision and dedication brought the initiative to life. She collaborated closely with fellow students Anna Han, Eleni Daskalis, Thaddeus Bhagan, Paul Barton, Shannon Flachner, and Anthony Baldasano. The event was made possible through the collective efforts of special education teacher Liza Laurino, Principal Wayne Jensen, members of the athletics department, the Wildcat Foundation, and the Office of Student Support Services.
With its resounding success, the Wheatley Games have set the foundation for what promises to be a cherished annual tradition—one that champions acceptance, celebration of differences, and the power of community.
