The Wheatley School junior Divya Jayam recently earned a place on the international stage after competing at the 2026 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the world's largest pre-college science competition.
Held this year in Phoenix, Arizona, Regeneron ISEF brought together 1,725 student researchers from across the United States and nearly 70 countries to present original scientific research and innovations. Divya was one of only 20 students from Long Island selected to advance to the prestigious competition after earning top honors at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF) in March.
At ISEF, Divya presented her research project, "Cephalexin as a Potential Novel Treatment for Parkinson's Disease Through Modulation of Gut Inflammasome Activity and Neuroprotective Pathways." Her work explores whether a commonly used antibiotic could potentially help treat Parkinson's disease by reducing inflammation in the gut and protecting nerve cells in the brain.
The project reflects the high level of scientific inquiry, innovation, and independent research that the international competition seeks to recognize and promote among young scientists.
In addition to presenting her research, Divya had the opportunity to connect with fellow student researchers and STEM leaders from around the world. Participants took part in opening ceremonies, student networking events, a pin exchange with students representing different countries, and a special evening at Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Long Island participants also visited the iconic Red Rocks of Sedona during their trip.
Regeneron ISEF, organized by the Society for Science, is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious science competitions for high school students, providing a platform for young innovators to share research that addresses real-world challenges.
The East Williston School District congratulates Divya on this remarkable achievement and on representing both Wheatley and Long Island on the international stage. Her dedication to scientific research and discovery serves as an inspiration to fellow students and a testament to the strength of the district's academic programs.
