Five talented Herricks High School musicians recently took the stage at one of the nation's most prestigious performance venues after earning a spot in the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's Young Musicians Program finalist concert.
On May 7, the Herricks High School String Quintet performed at Alice Tully Hall as one of only 12 ensembles selected from across the region to participate in the 42nd Annual Young Musicians Program showcase. The students advanced to the finals after emerging as winners in regional competitions held in March.
The quintet, comprised of Nathan Tan, Julia Lam, Grace Kang, Ethan Yip and Kyle Yung, performed the New York premiere of Good Times, a contemporary work by acclaimed composer Xavier Foley.
The Young Musicians Program is a highly competitive chamber music initiative that identifies and supports exceptional student performers. To earn a place in the finalist concert, the Herricks ensemble completed a rigorous selection process that included submitting recordings for preliminary judging, advancing through a live regional semifinal round, and participating in a coaching session with a Chamber Music Society roster artist at Lincoln Center's Rose Studio.
Under the direction of Herricks High School orchestra teacher Catherine Birke, the students spent months preparing for the performance, which marked a significant achievement in their musical development.
Their appearance at Lincoln Center and successful performance of a New York premiere reflects both the students' dedication and the strength of the Herricks music program.
The district congratulated the students on this remarkable accomplishment and milestone in their musical journeys.
