The Mineola High School Mustangs Marching Band is preparing to take its talents across the Atlantic after officially accepting an invitation to perform in the prestigious 42nd London New Year’s Day Parade and Festival in 2028.

The invitation marks a historic milestone for the school district. According to parade officials, Mineola is the first marching band from New York State to receive an invitation to the internationally celebrated event since 1995.

The announcement was made during a special ceremony at Mineola High School, where members of the London New Year’s Day Parade delegation formally presented the invitation to students and district leaders.

Among the visiting dignitaries were Bob Bone, founder and chairman of the London New Year’s Day Parade and Festival; Steve Summers, chair of the London Mayors’ Association and former Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster; Dean Oblonsky, senior American consultant; and Bill Northen and Jonathan Whaley, senior directors of international participation.

The celebration opened with a spirited performance by the championship Mustangs Marching Band, showcasing the musical talent, precision and enthusiasm that helped earn the ensemble international recognition.

Remarkably, parade organizers first discovered the band through social media posts and online performance videos highlighting its achievements. Impressed by the musicians’ performances and reputation for excellence, organizers selected Mineola to join some of the world’s top marching ensembles.

“We only invite the very best U.S. marching bands to participate in the event, and the Mineola High School Mustangs Marching Band is no exception,” Bone said during the ceremony. “Their reputation goes before them.”

The London delegation also presented commemorative gifts to the school, including a decorative plate and teacups from Buckingham Palace. Junior Vivienne Owens received a City of Westminster crest pin and the parade’s traditional “lucky umbrella,” which she has been entrusted to keep until the band travels to London. The tradition is intended to bring good weather on parade day.

On Jan. 1, 2028, the Mustangs will join approximately 10,000 performers from around the world for the parade, which draws hundreds of thousands of spectators to the streets of London and reaches an estimated 340 million television viewers worldwide. The event will also be broadcast commercial-free in the United States on PBS.

Adding to the excitement, Mineola High School’s Wind Ensemble has also been selected to perform at one of the festival’s prestigious gala concerts. Held at distinguished venues throughout London, the concerts feature talented student musicians from around the world.

Beyond their performances, students will participate in a weeklong educational and cultural experience, exploring London’s historic landmarks, museums and other attractions while representing their school and community abroad.

The invitation recognizes years of dedication and hard work by Mineola’s student musicians, band directors and supporters. As preparations begin for the 2028 trip, the Mustangs look forward to bringing their school pride and musical excellence to an international audience.

For the Mineola community, the opportunity represents more than a parade performance. It is a chance for local students to make history, experience another culture and showcase their talents on one of the world’s most celebrated stages.
