On April 25, Herricks High School students demonstrated the power of compassion and community by participating in the school’s annual Blood Drive. The event, held in partnership with the New York Blood Center (NYBC), gave students the opportunity to make a life-saving difference at a time when donations are urgently needed.
With blood supplies—especially type O+ and O−—critically low across the region, this effort couldn’t have come at a more important time. NYBC recently reported a significant drop in donations, with overall collections nearly 20% below the level required to meet hospital demands. Seasonal factors such as school breaks and busy spring schedules have only added to the shortage.
Despite those challenges, Herricks students were eager to roll up their sleeves and help. The district extended its gratitude to the NYBC volunteers who guided students through the donation process, shared valuable insights about the importance of giving blood, and even brought along snacks to keep spirits high.
This meaningful tradition continues to highlight the generosity and civic-mindedness of the Herricks community—one donation at a time.
